The African Union (AU) is an African Union that is a continental union made up of 55 member states across the continent of Africa. The AU was declared in the Sirte Declaration in Sirte, Libya on September 9, 1999, requesting the creation of the African Union.
The organization was established on May 26, 2001 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and was officially launched on the 9th of July 2002 in Durban, South Africa.
The goal of the AU was to replace the Organization of African Unity (OAU) founded on May 25, 1963 in Addis Ababa by 32 of the signatory governments. The OAU was broken up on July 9, 2002.
