International Center for Agricultural Research The International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA) is seeking to recruit a Research Officer III – Small Ruminant Nutritionist who will act as a specialized research and technical expert in animal nutrition. The incumbent will lead, manage and coordinate advanced national research programs related to animal feed and animal feed. This role will provide technical expertise to drive innovation and improve small ruminant production systems through sustainable animal husbandry practices, policies and technologies. This includes supporting research teams, managing resources and disseminating knowledge.

The International Center for Dryland Agricultural Research (ICARDA) is an international autonomous, non-profit research organization temporarily based in Beirut, Lebanon, supported by the Advisory Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ICARDA works to improve the livelihoods of resource-poor people in drylands by increasing food security and alleviating poverty through agricultural research and the equitable use of natural resources. Main tasks:

  • Develop and monitor the implementation of national small ruminant nutrition research programs aligned with CGIAR initiatives and programs and national development priorities.
  • Identify new challenges and opportunities in the national small ruminant nutrition sector and formulate innovative research strategies to address them.
  • Lead the planning, coordination and management of multiple national feed and feed research projects, assessing their progress and impact and preparing detailed reports for stakeholders.
  • Conduct advanced data analysis to interpret research results and produce comprehensive reports, technical documents and publications. Represent ICARDA in national and international forums to share insights and insights.
  • To provide advanced, evidence-based technical guidelines for small ruminant nutrition and management practices to inform animal husbandry strategies and national policy development.
  • Lead and mentor researchers, technicians and support staff in the area of ​​small ruminant nutrition and promote professional development and collaboration.
  • Organize training programs, workshops and seminars to build capacity in research and management of small ruminant nutrition.
  • Collaborate and foster partnerships with research institutions, government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and community groups to influence policies and programs in the area of ​​small ruminant nutrition.
  • Help mobilize research funding to support research activities through grant applications, partnerships and collaborations.

Academic and professional qualifications:

Education:

  • MSc degree in Animal Nutrition or Veterinary Science from a recognized university.
  • Broad/subject-specific knowledge of methods, techniques and processes

Experience:

  • At least seven years of relevant experience in developing countries,
  • proven experience in conducting and leading applied livestock research.
  • Work experience in an animal nutrition laboratory.
  • Good knowledge of scaling approaches to animal nutrition or related technologies

Skills:

  • Familiarity with research protocols and ethical standards in animal research.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in quality control and data analysis of key data.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills with a track record of successfully collaborating in multidisciplinary teams

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is looking for a Research Associate I – Project Focus Person for the Afar Region. The staff member is expected to implement the activities of an upcoming “Livestock Restoration in Conflict and Drought Affected Areas of Ethiopia (RESTORE)” project led by senior ILRI colleagues in collaboration with local partners.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for the efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. ILRI is one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated exclusively to animal husbandry research for developing countries. Jointly hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, the company has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, South and West Africa. www.ilri.org.

Main tasks:

  • Support the implementation of the RESTORE project activities by working with partners and stakeholders, including public authorities, private service providers and livestock farmers, to achieve the project objectives,
  • Establish and maintain good relationships with regional, zonal, woreda and kebele livestock development offices for the smooth implementation of the RESTORE project,
  • Assist in facilitating and participating in internal and external project-related meetings.
  • Assist in developing quarterly plans and supporting animal health and feed services activities for the RESTORE project in the region,
  • Support in training animal owners and private service providers,
  • Act as an on-site implementer, conducting needs assessments and supporting capacity development in collaboration with ILRI senior project staff.
  • Participate in regular monitoring activities, collect and store required project data, participate in the preparation of quarterly progress reports, and support project communications and visibility activities under the direction of ILRI senior project staff and communications officers.
  • Complete additional tasks as needed.

Academic and professional qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma from a recognized university in veterinary science, animal science or animal production

Experience:

  • One year of relevant professional experience for the bachelor’s degree, including experience working with livestock producers, private and public sector actors, as well as practical field experience in the provision of animal health services, food safety, and feed development and feed services.
  • Three years of relevant professional experience for diploma holders
  • Experience working with relevant animal husbandry services in the relevant region with good network and influence.
  • Experience capturing and compiling research/development data in a spreadsheet program is considered an added advantage.
  • Experience in implementing donor projects is desired

Skills:

  • Knowledge of the relevant subject area and mastery of simple tools
  • Effective coordination/collaboration, communication and collaboration skills with project staff and various partners such as livestock farmers, private service providers, experts and heads of public offices, etc
  • Basic knowledge and skills on methods and techniques for implementing research and development activities in animal health and feed development, including:
  • Organize and conduct surveys in accordance with survey designs
  • Interventions/designs for feed development and delivery modalities for feed services,
  • Animal health activities, including organizing service delivery with public and private sector actors, basic diagnostic/sampling techniques as part of health data collection
  • Good knowledge of regional livestock services (in the relevant region), including animal health and feed services
  • Computer skills, including MS Office, especially spreadsheets.
  • Flexible working hours including office work, travel and extended field work
  • Ability to prepare progress reports
  • Knowledge of national and regional livestock development policies, strategies and regulations
  • Fluent in the regional language Amharic and has a high level of English proficiency
