The regional programme “Improving the Prevention of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the Horn of Africa”, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), is committed to working alongside key stakeholders in Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan to advance the prevention and abandonment of FGM and other related forms of gender-based violence (GBV). By strengthening the capacities of public institutions, civil society and local communities – and fostering their collaboration – we help build the momentum needed to shift social norms and eliminate harmful practices.
At the heart of its efforts, FGM-Prev works hand-in-hand with national ministries to systematically transform harmful social norms and strengthen the prevention of harmful practices against women and girls. From impactful information and educational campaigns to embedding prevention measures into national policies, the programme ensures that FGM and GBV remain firmly on the political agenda. Equally important is the programme’s close collaboration with community-based organizations. By challenging patriarchal norms and power imbalances, these organizations play a key role in dismantling the root causes of FGM and related forms of GBV, such as child marriage, paving the way for safer and more equitable communities.
