Job vacancies at the International Livestock Research Institute. The International Livestock Research Institute or ILRI is an international agricultural research institute within the CGIAR – formerly the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research.

ILRI’s research is directed to improving food and nutrition security through increased production and access to animal-source foods; stimulating economic development and poverty reduction through enhanced livestock value chains and increased productivity; improving human health through improved access to animal-source foods and a reduction in the burden of zoonotic and food-borne diseases; and managing the adaptation of livestock systems to climate change and mitigating the impact of livestock on the environment.

1:Research Officer II – Agricultural Innovation System – Internal/External

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) seeks to recruit a Research Officer II – Agricultural Innovation System to initiate, provide suggestions for, and monitor the small-scale irrigations (SSI) and agrifood systems scaling partnership to promote private and public sector’s investments and interventions in Ethiopia. While primarily dedicated to SSI initiatives, also contribute to various ongoing projects, including Solar and irrigation projects, Digital Innovations for a Water Secure Africa (DIWASA), Ukama Ustawi, and other initiatives and bilateral projects.

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is a non-profit international research organization, serving a global mandate to improve management of water and land for food, livelihoods and nature. IWMI headquarters is located in Colombo, Sri Lanka and one of its sub-regional office is located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. IWMI is one of the 15 research centers supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

Key Responsibilities:

Support research on scaling and partnership activities for small-scale irrigation (SSI). Activities include:

  • Conducting field data collection, secondary data collection, literature synthesis, interviews and other forms of research activities;
  • Analysing data and draft scientific publications, policy briefs and technical reports in the areas of private and public sector’s SSI and agrifood systems scaling interventions;
  • Conducting SSI and agrifood systems stakeholder analysis and mapping, market margin assessment along scaling pathways, private sector financing, and identification of blocking and enabling mechanisms to SSI and agrifood systems scaling;
  • Facilitating the collaboration among partners and researchers to pilot joint data collection and analysis, and monitoring and evaluating of SSI and agrifood systems scaling pathways to document and present lessons learned to sustainably and equitably incentivize uptake;
  • Identifying partnerships, policies and institutional requirements for testing approaches, technologies and investment propositions that have strong scaling potential
  • Facilitate collaboration among partners and researchers for joint data collection, analysis, monitoring, and evaluation of SSI and agrifood systems scaling pathways;
  • Under direction of the project leaders, overseeing the development of SSI scaling pilots and partnerships in Ethiopia, researchers and external partners;
  • Building and maintaining SSI and agrifood systems scaling dialogue platforms and processes with national and regional stakeholders and research partners, including the private sector;
  • Perform any other related duties as may be required.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Development Economics, Human Geography, Sociology, or a closely related field relevant to Water Resources Management, Agricultural Development and Agricultural innovation systems and scaling, or similar

Experience:

  • At least five years relevant work experience, preferably in areas such as scaling of agricultural innovation, and facilitating multi-stakeholder dialogues and/or innovation platforms
  • Experience in transforming research into knowledge products for outreach and impact in Ethiopia and wider forms of development policy and practice influence
  • Proven track record in communicating research findings in international conferences and other platforms.

Skills:                 

  • Ability to facilitate and coordinate multi-stakeholder partnerships in agri-business and irrigation, and gender and youth inclusion issues
  • Ability to maintain strong external partnerships and alliances in complex institutional environments, including the private sector
  • Ability to apply technical, economic, and institutional reasoning to innovation scaling and policy issues in a critical manner
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively with academic and non-academic stakeholders
  • Ability to in using statistical analytical techniques

Job Grade: HG 14

Monthly Base Salary: Birr 54,708

2:Project Accountant – Internal/External

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in maintaining project finances, transactions, and contracts,
  • Plan, implement, monitor, and report on project financial management,
  • Monitor project budgets and forecasts, ensuring costs are controlled and deadlines are met,
  • Facilitate and process travel advance, and work advances for staff, consultants, and staff from partner institutions, in:
    • preparing Travel Authorization (TAs); follow up and assist in the timely settlement of per diem, and work advances,
    • ensuring that they have complete documentation, accurate, checking for accuracy and compliance with CIFOR-ICRAF regulations.
  • Ensure payments are processed within a predetermined time after verifying the requests received have sufficient/appropriate supporting evidence and are mathematically correct, in compliance with policy and procedures, and have proper authorization,
  • Facilitate financial arrangements and payments for project activity-related training, workshops, and others,
  • Ensure that all project financial activities are conducted with the approval of appropriate project designees for expense approval and technical oversight,
  • Provide information to appropriate staff concerning payments, advances, required documentation, and other financial aspects of the project activity,
  • Prepare project monthly cash forecast/projection and contribute to compiling the country office cash forecast/projection,
  • Assist the project team in the preparation of the activity budgets and modifications and analyzing variances between budgeted and actual performance,
  • Ensure that all project financial transactions are recorded accurately into the CIFOR-ICRAF computer accounting system,
  • Establish and maintain financial files and ledgers for the project and country office finance.
  • Compile monthly, quarterly, bi-annual, and annual financial reports of the project in accordance with the donor agreement,
  • Liaise with project managers and stakeholders to understand project financial requirements and deliverables,
  • Support the country office in monthly and annual closing processes and the preparation of schedules and relevant reports for the CIFOR-ICRAF country office,
  • Prepare and implement management systems for the project’s fixed assets, goods received registry, and vehicle log sheet,
  • Support project partners to establish and prepare standard and proper accounting systems including appropriate format in compliance with CIFOR-ICRAF procurement and financial regulation,
  • Confirm all the outstanding payments, outstanding advances, and partner advances are cleared before the projects closed,
  • Support the country office’s internal and external audits by compiling documentation and providing necessary information,
  • Any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Relevant professional certification
  • Broad / specialized knowledge of methods, techniques and processes

Experience:

  • Five years of professional experience in accounting preferably in a non-profit environment.

Additional Skills:

  • Experience in using accounting software or ERP system.
  • Ability to work independently driven by a desire to achieve results.
  • Excellent computer skills in MS‐office applications (Word, Excel).
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact with partners and colleagues in a multi-cultural setting.
  • Advanced level in English
